  • ToneSpec Vintage Clone Series – AY50 Strat Pickup Set

When Abigail Ybarra wound pickups in the Fender Custom Shop, one of her most coveted creations was the “Fat ‘50s” Strat set—a model that gave players just a bit more muscle without sacrificing the shimmer and clarity that made her name legendary. These pickups walked the line perfectly: warm, bold, and still unmistakably vintage.

The real-deal Abby Fat ‘50s sets? Rare. Retired. And when they do pop up, they’re usually priced like collector’s art—or worse, they’ve been rewound or misrepresented.

    That’s why we built these.

The Vintage Clone AY-50 is our faithful recreation of Abigail’s ‘50s wind, crafted using the same core materials and techniques: Heavy Formvar wire, Alnico magnets, and true scatter-winding—just like Abby did it. But we didn’t stop there. We dialed in the balance that made the originals famous, and added a touch more dynamic range to suit today’s more responsive amps, stages, and studios.

You’ll get the thicker midrange, sweeter lows, and a slightly pushed voice that defined the best of Abby’s Custom Shop years—without losing that iconic Fender top-end sparkle. Whether you're digging in for blues, rolling back for clean jazz, or pushing a vintage amp into edge-of-breakup territory, the AY-50 stays rich, musical, and expressive.

If you're chasing that Custom Shop-era Abigail tone—with the extra punch of the Fat ‘50s flavor—this is your set.

And if you’re wondering why to trust us to bring these tones back to life? We’ve already cloned the most elusive: Virgil Arlo, Tim White, Tom Holmes, and now, multiple eras of Abby herself. Our pickups are trusted by Grammy winners, Nashville pros, and serious vintage collectors worldwide.

So if you’ve been looking for that Ybarra-wound phat ‘50s sound, but don’t want to roll the dice on secondhand sets—we’ve got you covered.

“These pickups respond just like vintage pickups. What makes them better than vintage pickups is that each set is consistent. You don’t don’t get that with vintage pickups…some are great & some are duds.  The Tone Specific’s always sound amazing. There's nothing else like these on the market.”
