Feel & Nuance = Legendary Blues Tone

If you’re the type of player who believes amazing blues tone is about feel and nuance, then you’re the type of player we built these for.

If you know that the right note, bent the right way, says more than a flurry of scales, then welcome in. You’ve found your pickups.

Most Common Trade-Ins for Blues P.A.F. Humbuckers

The ToneSpec 1959 Blues P.A.F. Humbuckers are a true Pro-Level set of P.A.Fs, built for players who demand exceptional feel, harmonic content, and dynamic response.

This is the set serious blues players move to when they want the expressive response and touch sensitivity associated with true vintage PAF tone. Many players arrive here after spending years trying other well-known humbuckers.

Through the ToneSpec Pickup Trade-In Program, we consistently see the same pickups being traded toward the 1959 Blues P.A.F. set.

The most common trade-ins include:

Seymour Duncan

Gibson Burstbuckers & 57 Classic

Bare Knuckle

Lollar Imperials

Fralin Pure PAF

Tom Holmes

These are all respected pickups with strong followings. However, many players eventually move to the Blues P.A.F. set when only the best feel, harmonic richness, and vintage-style response will do.

If you currently own one of these sets, you can apply it toward a Blues P.A.F. upgrade through the ToneSpec trade-in program. We also take trades of other brands. Contact us to see if we'll accept your unwanted pickups.

1959 Blues P.A.F. – Specifications

DC Resistance
True vintage-output P.A.F. range (mid 7 to mid 8), carefully calibrated so the neck and bridge complement each other perfectly. The bridge provides strong midrange punch and harmonic complexity, while the neck delivers warmth, clarity, and dynamic touch response without becoming muddy.

Magnet Wire
Period-correct Plain Enamel magnet wire, the same insulation used in late-1950s Gibson humbuckers. This wire contributes to the rich harmonic overtones, open mids, and natural compression associated with the best vintage P.A.F. examples.

Magnet Type
ToneSpec Proprietary Alnico magnets, engineered to combine the dynamic response and articulation associated with Alnico 5 with the warmth and sweetness players love from Alnico 2. The result is a balanced humbucker that sound amazing clean, stays clear when pushed while remaining expressive and musical in higher gain situations.

Matched Set Calibration
Each pickup is individually calibrated so the neck and bridge function as a true set. Output, magnet strength, and coil balance are tuned to deliver smooth transitions between positions and maximum tonal response from the guitar.

Unpotted Tone without Feedback

This is one of the main features that keep our pro clients coming back. Our proprietary finishing technique delivers the "alive" feeling of unpotted PAFs while eliminating unwanted feedback of old unfinished/unpotted humbuckers.

1959 Blues P.A.F. – Tone Profile

The ToneSpec 1959 Blues P.A.F. set was designed for players who rely on touch, dynamics, and harmonic expression. Like the best original late-50s P.A.F. humbuckers, these pickups respond directly to the player’s hands. Pick lightly and the tone opens up with clarity and bloom. Dig in and the guitar pushes back with rich midrange and natural compression.

This is the sound serious blues players look for when they want a guitar that feels alive.

Neck Pickup
Warm, vocal, and incredibly expressive. Notes bloom with a smooth attack, full midrange, and clear top end that never becomes muddy. Perfect for singing blues leads, slow bends, and rich chord voicings.

Bridge Pickup
Focused, warm, and harmonically. The bridge delivers the bite and authority players need for expressive blues solos while still retaining the sweetness and dynamic feel of a true vintage P.A.F. This pickup has almost infinite sustain thanks to our proprietary Infinite Bridge Technology.

Middle Position
Open and balanced with beautiful harmonic complexity. This position blends the warmth of the neck with the articulation of the bridge, producing a wide, three-dimensional tone ideal for rhythm work and dynamic lead playing.

Dynamic Response
These pickups are built for touch sensitivity. The harder you play, the more the pickup responds, creating natural compression, harmonic bloom, and sustain without relying on excessive output or heavy EQ.

The result is a humbucker set that allows the guitar, the amp, and the player to work together naturally. When players talk about “vintage P.A.F. feel,” this is what they mean.

What Makes the 1959 Blues P.A.F. Different

Many humbuckers attempt to recreate a specific vintage P.A.F. specification. The reality is that original late-1950s P.A.F. pickups varied widely. Some had extraordinary feel and harmonic richness, while others sounded flat, noisy, dark, or unbalanced between positions.

The 1959 Blues P.A.F. set captures the expressive response and harmonic complexity of the best original P.A.F. humbuckers while improving the balance between the neck and bridge.

Each pickup is individually calibrated so the set functions as a complete system. The bridge delivers strong midrange presence and harmonic bite, while the neck remains warm, open, and articulate without becoming muddy.

The result is a humbucker set that feels alive under the player’s hands, producing the bloom, sustain, and dynamic response that made the finest vintage P.A.F.s legendary.

Who These Pickups Are For

The 1959 Blues P.A.F. set was designed for players who rely on touch, dynamics, and expressive phrasing rather than sheer output.

These pickups are ideal for guitarists who want:

• A warm, vocal neck pickup for expressive blues leads
• A bridge pickup with strong midrange bite and harmonic richness
• Clear note separation for complex chords and phrasing
• Natural sustain and harmonic bloom
• True vintage output that allows the guitar and amplifier to breathe

Many players arrive here after years of experimenting with well-known humbuckers, eventually searching for a set with greater feel, balance, and dynamic response.

The 1959 Blues P.A.F. set was built for that player.

Obsession of Tone

Most builders talk about “cloning” 1959 PAFs like it’s a recipe you can just copy. The truth is, those early humbuckers were all over the place. Some were flat, some were harsh and a rare few had that thing… the voice that makes a guitar sound alive.

"I’ve spent decades tearing apart real vintage sets, chasing down the details others overlook. Wire gauge, internal coil tension, magnets , even how the coil offset changes the way a note blooms. I don’t just measure specs. I live inside the pickup until I know why it's unique" - Randall Van Dyke (founder of ToneSpec)

That obsession led to the 1959 ToneSpec Blues Humbucker. It’s not just another “PAF-style” set. It’s the result of years of dissecting, listening, and revoicing until the feel matched the rare originals players swear by.

If you’re the type of player who knows that mojo isn’t an accident—it’s the sum of a thousand tiny choices—then you’ll understand what we’ve done here.

Every set is wound, tested, and refined until it delivers the open, articulate, warm and complex tone that makes you forget about gear and fall back in love with your guitar.

This isn’t production. This is obsession—turned into tone.

Focus on Pro Tone

Look around. Players are trading in Duncans, Fralins, Lollars, even boutique one-offs—for ToneSpec. Why? Because the proof is in the playing.

-Trusted by Grammy-winning composers

-Played by first-call session pros

-Built for players that require the best for their music

And when you hear it from the players themselves, it hits even harder:

“These pickups give me the dynamics and soul I need. They respond like a voice—best pickups I ever played”
Wilbert Crosby Jr. (formerly of BB King Band)

Passion of Perfection

Perfection isn’t an accident—it’s a process. Every 1959 ToneSpec Blues Humbucker is built under a microscope of detail.

-Built to vintage output standards, measured and matched to the tightest tolerances in the business.

-Magnets are aged, charged, and tested for consistency—not just once, but through repeated cycles.

-Every set is run through an in-depth testing protocol that shifts temperature and humidity, so they perform flawlessly on stage, in the studio, or on the road. Day after day, night after night, no matter where you live or where your next gig takes you.

If you’re the kind of player who believes the difference between good and great lives in the details—then you’ll hear why this obsession with perfection matters from the very first note.

PRO TESTIMONIALS

“You are a Genius. These things make a solid state amp sound like it has Tubes in it. They have this 3-D thing going on. I’ve tried every important pickup upgrade since 1983 & the pickups are the best by far. I want these in all of my guitars.”
-Mark Whitfield, Legendary Guitarist

"I was knocked out by your pickups! Plugged straight in, it sounds like it was going through a top shelf tube compressor—only better.
I’m the luthier/owner of Stonetree Custom Guitars for over 20 years now. My goal is to craft a “brand new old guitar”. I have relied on a couple of the biggest boutique pickup makers for the most part, but your pickups are a game changer. I have built guitars for many pros including Eric ‘Roscoe’ Ambel & Joe Bonamassa."
-Scott Platts, Luthier

"These are the best pickups I've ever used. I'm so happy to have these in my guitars. They are better than vintage pickups. I was shocked to discover they are even better than the Arlo's. They just feel & sound amazing. Man you are a Genius. "
- Will Crosby, Legendary Guitarist (BB King, Aretha Franklin, Mavis Stables)

“It sounds like the have Tubes in them...almost three dimensional. They just sound really sweet. I don’t how they do it but they even feel sweet. Just like vintage pickups but with more sustain and less noise. They are just amazing”
-Mike Gallaher, Legendary Guitarist - Joe Cocker, Leon Russell

"Just like vintage pickups only better. They have this dynamic thing going on kind of like a great tube amp. I imagine this is what new vintage pickups sounded like back in the 50's & 60's"
-Dani Robinson, Blues Guitarist (Performs Jimi parts w/Billy Cox Experience)

“Fascinating recording the Les Paul Gold Top with the 57/61 Deluxe PAF's and comparing to my other Les Paul with stock pickups! At higher gain levels the Tone Specific's has great definition. There are harmonics coming out of the amp in the room I’m not used to with when using the Tone Specific's & it translate's beautifully when recorded! Interesting!!”
Doug Rappoport (Edgar Winter Band)
